Ah, finally – that beautiful spring weather we’ve all been waiting for! Waking up to the chirping of birds is always music to our ears! We can finally say the snow is gone and green is springing up everywhere. We are so excited to have spring and have the sound of several birds fill the air, along with the wind.

Farm Animal Chatter

Of course, we always have our farm buddies like the chickens, ducks, and George the turkey keeping us entertained with their hilarious noises, especially when treat time rolls around. But now that it’s warm out, we’ve got all kinds of wild birds joining the party too!

Sounds of Robins, Blackbirds, and More

Man, those robins and blackbirds sure are eager little guys, aren’t they? No sooner does the ground thaw than they’re out there chirping up a storm and digging for worms all over the yard and fields. So fun to watch!

Down at the Barns

Taking a stroll down to the barns, you’ll hear an entire avian orchestra going on. More robins and blackbirds, of course, but also swallows and turtle doves showing off with their lovely singing abilities while busy building their nests. Sometimes they get a little miffed when I disturb their hard work and cheerful chirping! There is just something about listening to these little creatures that is peaceful.

We’ve even got some squatters this year – a small flock of pigeons that moved into the loft of one barn before we could fix a broken window. Just another farm project to add to the to-do list.

The Sounds of the Shelter Belt

Our little shelter belt is a hotbed of bird activity too. If you listen closely, you might hear the rhythmic rat-a-tat-tat of a woodpecker hard at work. And every now and then, a mysterious owl lets out a hoot to remind us he’s keeping watch.

The Cardinals’ Special Meaning

But of all the birds around here, the ones that hold the most meaning for me are the striking red cardinals. Growing up, my grandpa always sent cards with cardinals on them, since it was his favorite bird. So, they’ll always have a special place in my heart. Cardinals are just fascinating creatures and I have always paid attention to them whenever I have seen them. They have such a sweet sound to them, and I can always recognize them even if it takes me a minute or two to find where they are hiding at.

Last year, the cardinals were even more special to me. Last year was especially tough after my dad (“Papa”) passed away. I was really struggling with motivation and sadness. Well, one spring morning last year, I had taken the girls down to do the morning chores at the farm. They were off doing the chores and I was just watching the birds. As I started to pay attention, a beautiful red bird caught my eye. Then I noticed there were not one, but two cardinals. They were flitting around Papa’s old truck and building a nest in the apricot tree nearby.

A Heavenly Visitor

Watching their sweet courtship ritual – the male following the female, the birds then landing on either side on the truck just like my parents used to sit – well, it just felt like a little wink from above, you know? They say a cardinal in the yard means you have a visitor from heaven. Seeing that pair working together so diligently really did bring me a sense of peace and comfort.

Sweet Sounds are Music to My Ears

So whether it’s the cooing of turtle doves, the cheerful choruses of robins and blackbirds, or the bright flash of cardinal red through the trees, the sounds and sights of spring birds on the farm will always be music to my ears and food for my soul. Take a quiet moment to appreciate the beauty of nature’s live concert this season!
