Yes, you are a teacher…
When I hear parents say they aren’t a teacher, I just shake my head. The day you become a parent, is the day you begin to be your child’s first teacher. Each one of us can teach our children. Playing is learning, so find ways to teach your child through daily routines. These simple interactions we have with our children, will have lasting effects.
Long before my girls were old enough to start public school, I was teaching them at home and not even realizing the benefits they were receiving. The things I did were over the top, it was just simple everyday things. From reading a book together, to playing outside, there was always something new to learn. We would go on nature walks and look for bugs, flowers, trees, etc. or swim at the city pool. Sometimes we would pull out a craft box I put together and let the girls use their imagination. I wasn’t perfect in what I did, but I made the choice to teach the girls something every day.
Kids are sponges and they absorb everything they see and hear. They are eager to learn, so each opportunity gives you an opportunity to create bonds with your child. The best memories I have with my girls is watching them as they grew in knowledge. They would be so excited to show off what they learned with their dad when he came home from work.
Once they learn something new, keep practicing. Your child will need to keep working on their new skills to perfect them. Even if they forget, don’t criticize. They need you to be positive and supportive. Just like the saying goes, “practice makes perfect.”
You are your child’s first teacher, so take advantage of all the opportunities to help them learn. Put down your phone or tablet and play with your child. They need you to teach them without distractions. Kids need their parents to help them be success, even when they are little. Learning begins when they are born, not when they start school.
