Green is popping up everywhere and things look so much better around here. There is something amazing watching the world around us go from the dead of winter to the beauty of spring. As we embark on preparing the yard for the grass seed, the green we see makes it easy to find weeds and alfalfa in the yard area.
Getting Rid of the Green Alfalfa
There are a few parts of the yard we have been working on to level and kill off alfalfa that is starting to grow. Jason has spent quite a few hours spraying the alfalfa (this is what we are using) and dragging the area to make things as smooth as possible. It looks surprisingly good. Just like everything else, when you think you will be ready for the next step, the weather has put a wrench on things again.
Wind and Rain Delays
We are all ready to get this grass seed planted, but have a few hiccups. First off, the wind. The wind makes it difficult to get some things done when it is blowing between 20-40 mph. Even now as I am typing this, I can just hear the wind blowing away. Having a nice breeze is tolerable, but lately we feel like we are getting blown away. We can just watch out the window and see the dirt getting blown all around us, like a mini dust storm. So, planting grass seeds in the wind is a no go for now.
The days the wind decreases, we have our next problem. The next issue is the the rain. We love the rain (God’s water is the best water for things to turn green again!) and need the rain, but it disrupts our plans. We have had two days of rain this week that dumped a lot. Between the wind and the dry ground, it has quickly been drying up. Unfortunately, with work schedules and the upcoming forecast (several days of rain are on the way) getting the grass planted will be challenging.
Hoping For Some Dryer Days
We do hope that the wind and rain give us a break so we can get the grass planted soon. Having a front yard that is a mud pit is not fun. It also makes things challenging with the dogs when they go outside. Nobody likes to clean off those muddy paws, so we try to take them to the field or down the barns to let them run around.
Green Grass Soon
To be honest, we are ready to look outside and see a nice yard instead of the mud. It has been a long time since we have been able to look outside, let alone walk on a nice green yard. Fingers crossed that soon we will be posting pictures of the grass sprouting and less dirt flying around!
